A mixed martial arts fighter has died from brain injuries in his professional debut. The Aiken County (S.C.) coroner said Monday that 30-year-old Michael Kirkham died from bleeding inside the brain. Coroner Tim Carlton said Kirkham collapsed following Saturday night’s fight at the USC Aiken Convocation Center. Kirkham was from South Carolina and nicknamed “Tree” because he is 6-foot-9. He had fought six times as an amateur before turning pro.
‘Tree’ was also a lightweight fighter. 6’9, 155 pounds. Due to complaints from the American OBGYN Association, I have to preface this by saying I’m not a doctor, but I’m starting to think there might be extra dangers associated with giant stickmen fighting in combat sports. Corey Hill was so skinny for his 6’4 frame that his shin cracked in half on a leg kick. That’s pretty much the only anecdotal evidence I got, but horrific injury and death are a pretty powerful combo.
RIP Michael Kirkham.
