Andrei Arlovski is trying out boxing

Anderson Silva isn’t the only major MMA fighter who wants to compete as a boxer … it looks like Andrei Arlovski is getting ready to take the plunge as well.

MMA star Andrei Arlovski, the former UFC heavyweight champion from Belarus, has been training for a boxing career under the tutelage of trainer Freddie Roach. Arlovski, who has an MMA bout July 19, likely will make his professional boxing debut Sept. 13 (HBO PPV) in the opening fight on the Casamayor-Marquez card in Las Vegas, according to Golden Boy.

It will be interesting to see who Arlovski is matched up with. Boxing matches are often booked with a specific winner and loser in mind (that’s where Gary Shaw got his booking style from), so unless Arlovski is getting thrown under the bus or just sucks hardcore, then I’d expect a pretty soft opponent that the Pitbull will defeat handily. Still, I’ll be tuning in for sure to see how he does.

Even with the Heavies in boxing kind of lacking these days, give me a break. The only good thing is Roach is his trainer, so they will throw him some fresh meat..
As for Silva… He got worked by an open class amateur in a Miami gym.. Even washed up Roy Jones would make him look foolish…

  • Pay days are bigger in boxing if Arloski becomes a star.

  • Crank says:

which I dont understand. If UFC is eclipsing boxing as many say, why are the paydays so disparate?? I think that is the only reason A.Silva is calling out Roy Jones. He wants to get paid coz the UFC keeps feeding him Leben type hack talent..

  • I’m gonna write something about that tomorrow but let me sum it up quickly here: there’s no money going back into the sport of boxing, which is why it sucks such dick. All those super-paydays for the Oscars and the Floyds are what killed boxing.

  • Crank says:

Then why do A. Silva and Arlovski want in?? Frankly, I think they are great in MMA, but in boxing they wont make much noise. So why try to switch if not for the cake????
