Anderson Silva seems like a pretty laid back guy. Easy to smile and joke around, he’s more likely to show you some dance moves than get in your face. Even in fights, he usually kept cool and collected. That wasn’t so much the case in the Dan Henderson fight … you got the feeling that Anderson Silva came into that fight pissed off, that the shit Dan Henderson was saying had gotten back to Silva and he wasn’t happy about it.
After the end of a first round where Hendo had managed to hold Silva down and play bonga on his head for a minute or two, Silva looked positively pissed off, speaking angrily to his corner. And then he went back into the fight and took that anger out on poor Hendo, knocking him silly and then choking him out. “No disrespect to Dan” his translator said after the fight. “But the only other real champion that Anderson has faced is Rich Franklin.” Yeah … no disrespect to Dan at all!
And as far as I know, there wasn’t even any real heat between those two coming into that fight. Now we have a fight between Silva and Okami which hasn’t even been announced and there’s already some bad blood appearing, at least on Anderson Silva’s side. Back in 2006 he lost a fight against Okami due to an illegal kick, which Anderson seems to think is bullshit:
“I feel it was a cheap, cowardly way of winning,” a pointed Silva says more than two years after the scrap. “People that were there saw that he was in the condition to come back and keep fighting, and he didn’t.”
Silva says he doesn’t “really think much of anything of Okami,” but the Brazilian was more poised when stuck under Henderson than he is when discussing the Japanese fighter.
“It wasn’t really a fight,” Silva describes the disqualification loss before adding that he doesn’t want to talk about it anymore.
One thing is for sure: Okami better bring his A game with him, otherwise he’s liable to be shipped back to Japan in a freakin’ body bag. Most fights involving Anderson Silva have a special kind of anticipation of brutal violence. For this one, I’m actually worried for Okami more than I was for Rich Franklin the second time around.
