Y’all know that I don’t buy the whole ‘Affliction postponing’ spin. They cancelled their second event, and now they’re doing something completely different in January with Golden Boy. And while the fighters from October’s card have all been told they’re moving over to the new date, I’ve still got my doubts. Not helping things is this from MMA Junkie / Inside MMA:
“There are going to be some changes — not huge changes but definitely changes for the better,” Atencio said. “I know that Fedor will be involved again, which is wonderful.”
“We’re just going to re-evaluate everything and make sure it’s the best card and just keep that momentum going from the first event (in July).”
This past weekend Affliction confirmed a new partnership with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions. The newly formed partnership will include four co-promoted pay-per-view events that will begin in 2009. The cards will feature both mixed martial arts and boxing matches in the same ring.
While Affliction is trying to sugar coat the changes as being positive, I’m not so sure fighters will see them that way if they’re cut to make room for boxing matches. With 11 MMA matches having been originally booked, I have no idea how they’ll keep them all unless they’re planning a 6 – 8 hour event.
